YAKIGATA — The Fired Clay-Mold Method

Yaki-gata, literally the "fired clay-mold" method, is one of the oldest and most demanding techniques in Nambu ironware. Each casting mold is shaped entirely by hand from fine sand and clay, then fired at high heat in a kiln before molten iron is poured in. This firing is why the artisan can capture delicate textures and fine patterns that simpler, mass-production molds cannot reproduce.

Because a single mold yields only a limited number of castings, every kettle carries its own subtle, individual character. A single piece can take months to complete, and the result represents the finest expression of Japanese tradition.
