The surface is coated with an antirust oxide layer using the traditional technique called kama-yaki, but because it is cast iron, rust may occur due to moisture and humidity.

Since the inside is not enameled, the leached iron and tannin may bind and discolor the tea. It is harmless to the human body.

Nambu ironware is produced using the traditional technique called "kama-yaki" to generate an oxide layer on the surface. It leads to "rust resistance" and "dissolved iron effect" and makes tea and coffee taste better.

Nambu Ironware, 2-in-1 Iron kettle and teapot type, DRAGONFLY, azure, 0.5L

My son went to Japan last year and we were fortunate that he brought back many things and a new found love for Japan, the people and the culture. Unfortunately, he could not bring back a kettle/teapot for me as - being in the main tourist areas - the quality and variety was limited.

Therefore I gave myself a treat and came on this website to look for what I wanted and found the dragonfly kettle/tea pot, perfect for me in terms of design, function and size.

500ml is more than big enough for one person with a refill, or two without, depending on your preference. I don't pretend and I don't want to insult Japanese culture and the respected tea ceremony, more than happy to use the opportunity in making tea for a quiet time for thought, reflection and flavour.

The kettle/teapot is beautiful. It came very well packaged and in good time through DHL. You will have to pay custom charges, for me, €50 which is quite expensive when you consider the cost of ironware, €150.

Because the Yen is at such a low level, it still makes this purchase very reasonable and special.

Please be aware that the tea making part will be comparatively slow if you ae used to using just a kettle into a tea-pot. You need to slowly boil the water over a medium temperature, then wait for a while to cool to the correct temperature for your tea.

You also need to dry the kettle over the heat source over a short period of time to prevent excess oxidisation, although oxidisation is the whole point about using these non-enamelled ironware.

There are clear instruction supplied with the product and you feel that you have purchased a small piece of Japanese history.

I highly recommend Oitomi as a company of exemplary standards. You will not be disappointed in the service and the quality.
