Notice

The surface is coated with an antirust oxide layer using the traditional technique called kama-yaki (high temperature baking treatment), but as it is cast iron, rust may occur due to moisture and humidity. Since all items are handmade, shape, color and size may vary from the photo.

DESCRIPTION

We are pleased to introduce a distinctive Tetsubin that hails from the expertise of Shingo Kikuchi (菊池真吾), a revered traditional craftsman from Shokado. His workshop is situated in Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture, the same locale as ours.

The appellation of "traditional craftsman" is officially sanctioned by the Japanese government, signifying artisans who uphold advanced techniques and mastery. Within the realm of Nambu Ironware, a select few individuals bear this distinction, and Shingo Kikuchi is counted among them.

Nambu ironware is fashioned through two distinct techniques: Nama-gata, involving sand molds, and Yaki-gata, utilizing clay molds fired in a kiln. Given that this particular Tetsubin is crafted using the Yaki-gata method, only a limited number of pieces can be produced from a single mold. Hence, its rarity is noteworthy.

The cylindrical shape and angular silhouette are sometimes referred to as "KATA (=shoulders)" taken from the human shoulders. Examples of this can be seen in Japanese tea utensils like the "katatsuki.(肩衝)" The intricate pattern of fine lines, known as "itome-gawa," along with the rust-like finish created by iron oxidation, evoke a sense of wonder and delight akin to discovering ancient artifacts hidden within a historical site.

The handle is a precious handcrafted forged piece. Another key feature is its flat shape on the upper surface, designed to make it easy for fingers to grip.

Internally, the surface is coated with an oxidized film achieved through a process called kama-yaki, eschewing the use of any paint. The reddish tones present in certain interior sections are a result of kama-yaki.

In comparison to other Tetsubin, this particular piece bears a higher price point. However, owing to the employment of the Yaki-gata technique, its robust adherence to traditional aesthetic compositions, and the distinctive inscription of the traditional craftsman, "真吾" (Shingo), this exceptional Tetsubin is poised to accompany you throughout your lifetime.

To make tea and coffee great

The water boiled in Nambu iron kettle tastes mellow and sweet even when drunk straight.

This is due to the effect of iron leaching into the hot water, but in order for the iron to leach out, the inside cannot be enameled or otherwise treated, and rust is liable to occur.

Nambu ironware is baked using the traditional technique called kama-yaki to produce an oxide layer on the surface. It leads to "rust resistance" and "water quality improvement" and makes tea and coffee taste better.
