DESCRIPTION
We are pleased to introduce a distinctive Tetsubin that hails from the expertise of Shingo Kikuchi (菊池真吾), a revered traditional craftsman from Shokado. His workshop is situated in Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture, the same locale as ours.
The appellation of "traditional craftsman" is officially sanctioned by the Japanese government, signifying artisans who uphold advanced techniques and mastery. Within the realm of Nambu Ironware, a select few individuals bear this distinction, and Shingo Kikuchi is counted among them.
Nambu ironware is fashioned through two distinct techniques: Nama-gata, involving sand molds, and Yaki-gata, utilizing clay molds fired in a kiln. Given that this particular Tetsubin is crafted using the Yaki-gata method, only a limited number of pieces can be produced from a single mold. Hence, its rarity is noteworthy.
The silhouette, known as "Houju-gata" (宝珠形), represents one of the oldest shapes within the annals of Nanbu ironware. This Tetsubin showcases the Houjyu silhouette adorned with the most iconic pattern, ARARE.
Internally, the surface is coated with an oxidized film achieved through a process called kama-yaki, eschewing the use of any paint. The reddish tones present in certain interior sections are a result of kama-yaki.
In comparison to other Tetsubin, this particular piece bears a higher price point. However, owing to the employment of the Yaki-gata technique, its robust adherence to traditional aesthetic compositions, and the distinctive inscription of the traditional craftsman, "南部 真吾" (Nambu Shingo), this exceptional Tetsubin is poised to accompany you throughout your lifetime.
